«Queste immagini non mostrano solo il loro viaggio alla scoperta di sé, ma riflettono anche il mio. Sono diventata parte del loro mondo e, senza accorgermene, loro hanno cambiato la mia vita.» Con queste parole la giovane fotografa americana Sara Messinger introduce “Shadow of a Teenage Daydream”, il progetto esposto in Italia per la prima volta da Crumb Gallery nel giugno 2025.
Un racconto fotografico nato per caso, nell’estate del 2021, da un incontro a Tompkins Square Park, nel cuore dell’East Village a New York, e cresciuto per quattro anni in stretta vicinanza con un gruppo di adolescenti.

"These images not only show their journey of self-discovery, but also reflect mine. I became part of their world, and without realizing it, they changed my life." With these words, the young American photographer Sara Messinger introduces "Shadow of a Teenage Daydream," the project exhibited in Italy for the first time by Crumb Gallery in June 2025.
A photographic story born by chance, in the summer of 2021, from an encounter in Tompkins Square Park, in the heart of New York's East Village, and developed over four years in close proximity to a group of teenagers.

SARA MESSINGER, nata nel 1998 a Voorhees, New Jersey, vive e lavora a New York. Ha iniziato a studiare fotografa alla Gallatin School of Individualized Study della New York University, dove si è laureata. Dopo la laurea ha iniziato a lavorare come fotografa documentarista su progetti incentrati su temi quali il genere, l’identità e le sottoculture. Il lavoro a lungo termine Shadow of a Teenage Daydream, che documenta un gruppo di adolescenti, è stato esposto per la prima volta nel maggio 2025 insieme al progetto Brooklyn Gang di Bruce Davidson alla Leica Gallery di New York.

SARA MESSINGER, born in 1998 in Voorhees, NJ, lives and works in New York City. She began studying photography at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU, where she graduated. Since then, she has worked as a documentary photographer on projects focused on themes such as gender, identity, and subcultures. Sara’s long-term work Shadow of a Teenage Daydream, documenting teenagers was frst exhibited this past May alongside Bruce Davidson’s Brooklyn Gang at the Leica Gallery in New York City.
