Il lavoro di Marco Lanza nasce dall’acquisto e dall’osservazione di migliaia di fotografie vernacolari sciolte, esaminate attraverso una maschera con un foro quadrato. Seguendo le linee della selezione, l’artista taglia le immagini ricavandone nuove opere, trasformando sia la parte scelta sia il residuo apparentemente scartato in composizioni aperte e ricche di possibilità interpretative. Alcune fotografie sono invece presentate integre ma sovrapposte, e in questi quadri la stratificazione della materia fotografica richiama la storia con la “s” minuscola, le storie familiari, di cui emerge solo la superficie, sospesa tra memoria, frammento e rielaborazione creativa.

Marco Lanza’s work originates from the acquisition and observation of thousands of loose vernacular photographs, examined through a mask with a square opening. He cuts the images to create new works, transforming both selected fragments and the residual “discarded” parts into open compositions rich with interpretive possibilities. Some photographs are presented intact but layered, and in these works the stratification of photographic material evokes lowercase “history,” family stories of which only the surface is visible, suspended between memory and creative reworking.

Nato a Firenze, si dedica alla fotografia fin da giovane e dagli anni Ottanta viaggia regolarmente per realizzare i suoi progetti. Si trasferisce per lunghi periodi in Australia, collaborando con agenzie e redazioni internazionali. Ha esposto in Italia e all’estero e molti suoi lavori sono stati pubblicati su riviste internazionali. Tra le sue pubblicazioni: The Living Dead – Inside the Palermo Crypt (2000), Velatura (2015) e Depositi (2016). Nel 2005, insieme al fratello musicista Saverio, fonda il progetto audiovisivo Pastis. Vive e lavora a Firenze.

A native of Florence, Marco Lanza began his photography career at a young age, traveling regularly from the 1980s for his projects. He and his family spent long periods in Australia, working with international agencies and publications. His work has been exhibited in Italy and abroad, and many pieces have appeared in international magazines. Notable publications include The Living Dead: Inside the Palermo Crypt (2000), Velatura (2015), and Depositi (2016). In 2005, he co-founded the audio-visual project Pastis with his musician brother Saverio. He lives and works in Florence.
