Summa condensa una parte eccellente dell’opera di Hans Georg Berger. Le 35 fotografie in bianco e nero selezionate, in buona parte inedite, formano un corpus dal pregevole valore estetico. Vi figurano i primi scatti irlandesi, le fotografie elbane (in particolare all’Eremo di S. Caterina), la vita a Monaco di Baviera, le immagini dell’Asia e del viaggio in Egitto con Hervé Guibert (1955-1991). Il percorso, tematico e circolare, si sviluppa dalla natura all’esperienza umana, dal corpo alle architetture, fino alla dimensione estetica e intellettuale, per poi ricongiungersi al punto di partenza.

Summa condenses an excellent part of Hans Georg Berger's work. The 35 selected black-and-white photographs, most of which are unpublished, form a corpus of particular aesthetic value. They include his earliest Irish photographs, work done at the Hermitage of St. Catherine on Elba, his sojourns in Munich, images from his art projects in Asia and travels in Egypt with Hervé Guibert (1955-1991). The exhibition’s thematic and circular journey develops from nature to human experience, from the body to architecture, to the aesthetic and intellectual dimension, before returning to the starting point.

Hans Georg Berger (1951) è fotografo, regista e studioso delle religioni. Negli anni ’70 e ’80 ha animato la scena del teatro sperimentale europeo, dirigendo l’Internationales Festival des Freien Theaters e cofondando la Münchener Biennale. All’Isola d’Elba ha restituito vita all’Eremo di Santa Caterina trasformandolo in un luogo di arte, ricerca e contemplazione. Dagli anni ‘80 il suo lavoro fotografico esplora rito e meditazione in Laos, Birmania e Iran; a Luang Prabang ha fondato l’Archivio di Fotografia Buddhista, che raccoglie 35.000 immagini dall‘inizio della fotografia ad oggi.

Hans Georg Berger (1951) is a photographer, director of theatre and scholar of religions. In the 1970s and ’80s, he was a leading figure of European experimental theatre, directing the Internationales Festival des Freien Theaters, and co-founding the Münchener Biennale. On the Island of Elba, he transformed the Hermitage of St. Catherine into a place of art, research and contemplation. His work explores ritual and meditation in Laos, Myanmar and Iran. In Luang Prabang, he founded the Buddhist Archive of Photography, which preserves 35,000 historical photos taken by the monks of that town.
